Night Safety in Puerto Escondido

Generally Safe, But Use Common Sense

Puerto Escondido is generally safe at night, but like anywhere in the world, you should exercise more caution after dark. Most safety incidents happen when tourists let their guard down, particularly after consuming alcohol.

Transportation at Night

One of the most important safety tips for Puerto Escondido is to use taxis for nighttime transportation, even for short distances. While the town hasn’t experienced the rise in muggings seen in some other Mexican cities, walking around at night should be avoided when possible to minimize any risk.

Beach Safety After Dark

There’s one specific nighttime warning worth noting: avoid walking on the beaches at night. Some travelers have reported issues with police making false accusations about carrying illegal substances and requesting bribes. While not everyone experiences this, it’s better to stay off the beaches after dark to avoid any potential problems

Beach and Water Safety

Swimming Conditions

Swimming safety in Puerto Escondido varies dramatically by beach location. The safest beaches for swimming are Playa Carrizalillo and Playa Manzanillo. Carrizalillo offers mostly calm waters with small, fun waves that break close to shore, making it ideal for families. Manzanillo is more shallow but watch out for boats in the area.

Ocean conditions can change hourly, so always assess the water before jumping in, even if you swam there recently. Look for red flags and observe where locals and other tourists are swimming safely.

Surfing Safety

Puerto Escondido offers surfing for all skill levels, but know your limits. Playa Carrizalillo is considered the best beginner surfing beach. La Punta typically offers beginner to intermediate surf breaks.

However, Playa Zicatela – nicknamed the “Mexican Pipeline” – should absolutely be left to very experienced and professional surfers. This is where world-class big wave competitions take place, and the waves break dangerously close to shore.

Protecting Your Valuables at the Beach

While theft at Puerto Escondido beaches isn’t common, it does happen. The best strategy is to bring only the cash you plan to spend and avoid bringing valuable items to the beach. If you must bring valuables, consider a waterproof phone case you can wear around your neck or a larger waterproof pouch that snaps around your waist.

Getting Around Puerto Escondido Safely

Transportation Options

Uber operates in Puerto Escondido and is available 24/7. Taxis are the most reliable option and are generally trustworthy and comfortable. Always negotiate the price before starting your ride – expect to pay around 200 pesos from northern Zicatela to the airport, or about 350 pesos from the airport to La Punta.

Colectivos: The Local Experience

For a more authentic and budget-friendly option, try the local colectivos – privately run 4×4 trucks with benches in the back covered by blue tarps. These cost approximately 15 MXN ($0.80 USD) per person for a standard ride (as of 2025) and run up and down Highway 200, connecting all the main beach areas. They typically stop running around 9-10 PM, so you’ll need taxis for late-night transportation. You can flag them down from the street, and they will drop you off near your destination. Pay the driver in cash, usually at the end of the trip.

Health and Safety Considerations

Water Safety

The tap water in Puerto Escondido is not safe to drink. Most homes and businesses use refillable 5-gallon jugs called “garrafones” for drinking water. Stick to bottled or filtered water throughout your stay.

Dengue Awareness

There’s been a recent surge in dengue fever cases in Puerto Escondido, which represents a new safety concern for travelers. Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves during dawn and dusk hours, and stay in accommodations with good mosquito screening when possible.

Natural Disaster Preparedness

Puerto Escondido can experience two types of natural disasters. Hurricane season is limited to specific months and usually provides enough advance warning to seek shelter. Earthquakes are more common throughout Oaxaca, though it’s unlikely you’ll feel a significant one during your visit. Still, familiarize yourself with basic earthquake safety procedures.

Puerto Escondido vs. Huatulco: Which is Safer?

Similar Safety Profiles

Both Puerto Escondido and Huatulco are considered safe destinations with no U.S. State Department travel restrictions. However, they offer very different experiences for travelers.

Huatulco: Family-Friendly and Organized

Huatulco tends to be more family-friendly and organized, with lower crime rates and a more resort-oriented atmosphere. It’s built around sustainable tourism principles and offers more regulated development. The beaches are generally calmer and more protected than Puerto Escondido.

Puerto Escondido: Authentic and Adventurous

Puerto Escondido offers a more authentic, laid-back Mexican beach town experience. It’s become increasingly popular with digital nomads and surfers who appreciate the more relaxed regulations and bohemian atmosphere. The town has more character and cultural authenticity, though this comes with slightly less infrastructure than Huatulco.

Practical Safety Tips for Your Visit

Puerto Escondido is known for its beach party scene, but be mindful of your alcohol consumption. Local mezcal is particularly strong, and overindulgence is one of the biggest safety risks for tourists. Stay aware of your surroundings and don’t leave drinks unattended.

Stay Connected

Keep your phone charged and inform someone of your daily plans, especially if you’re traveling solo. The town has good cell coverage, and most accommodations offer reliable WiFi.

Local Emergency Numbers

Save local emergency numbers in your phone and know the location of the nearest hospital or medical clinic. Most hotels and hostels can provide this information and assist with emergencies.

Solo Female Travel Safety

Generally Safe with Precautions

Puerto Escondido is considered safe for solo female travelers who take standard precautions. The local community is welcoming to solo travelers, and the tourism infrastructure is well-developed enough to support independent exploration.

Transportation Safety

Use official taxis or colectivos during daylight hours, and stick to taxis at night. If using Didi, wait for your ride in a safe, well-lit location with other people around.

Accommodation Recommendations

Choose well-reviewed accommodations in central areas like La Punta, Zicatela, or the town center rather than isolated locations. Many hostels and hotels cater specifically to solo travelers and can provide safety tips specific to your accommodation area.
