Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido: The Best Neighbourhoods

The best place to stay in Puerto Escondido depends on what you want from the beach. Stay in Rinconada for calm swimming coves and quiet streets, La Punta for a laid-back surf village and nightlife, Zicatela for the famous surf break and beachfront hotels, and Centro for local life and the lowest prices.

One rule matters more than any other: the big open beaches aren’t safe for swimming. If you want to swim, stay near the coves at Carrizalillo, Manzanillo or Puerto Angelito.

Rinconada: quiet, with the best swimming

Rinconada is the residential area west of the centre, up on the headland above the coves. The main street has some of the best restaurants in town, and it’s a short walk down to Playa Carrizalillo and Playa Manzanillo, the two best beaches for swimming and snorkelling.

  • Stay here if: you’re travelling with kids, you want to swim every day, or you’d rather have calm evenings than nightlife.
  • Skip it if: you’re travelling solo and want to meet people. You’ll spend your evenings taking taxis to La Punta.

Carrizalillo: the prettiest cove

Playa Carrizalillo is a small, sheltered turquoise bay at the bottom of about 170 stone steps. The water is gentle enough for swimming, snorkelling and beginner surf lessons. The hotels here are built into the cliff, and some have their own stairs down to the beach.

  • Stay here if: you want to wake up and walk to the calmest water in town.
  • Skip it if: stairs are a problem. The climb back up is steep.

Centro and El Adoquín: local life, lower prices

The town centre, around the pedestrian street known as El Adoquín and the main bay, Playa Principal, is where locals shop, eat and hang out. Prices are lower, the tacos are better, and it’s close to the bus station. Playa Principal and nearby Puerto Angelito are calm enough to swim, though Principal has fishing-boat traffic.

  • Stay here if: you’re on a budget, you want a Mexican town rather than a resort, or you’re arriving by bus.
  • Skip it if: you want to step out of your door onto a big sandy beach.

Zicatela: the surf beach

Playa Zicatela is the long beach home to the Mexican Pipeline, one of the heaviest beach breaks in the world. The strip behind it is lined with hotels, cafés, bars and the town’s best nightlife.

  • Stay here if: you surf, you want to watch the pros, or you want nightlife on your doorstep.
  • Don’t swim here. The waves and undertow are dangerous, even on days that look calm.

La Punta: the surf village

La Punta sits at the south end of Zicatela, about 3 km from the centre. Smaller waves make it the place for beginner surfers, and its sandy streets are full of hostels, vegan and taco spots, and a young, social crowd.

  • Stay here if: you’re backpacking, learning to surf, or want to meet other travellers.
  • Skip it if: you want quiet. Expect music at night and construction by day.

Bacocho: quiet and wild

Playa Bacocho is a long, open beach at the western edge of town, with beach clubs, big sunsets and very few people. It’s also where you can join an evening turtle release, usually around 5pm in season.

  • Stay here if: you want space, quiet and a beach club with a pool.
  • Don’t swim in the sea here. The rip currents are strong.

Getting around

Taxis are everywhere and cheap: about 40-50 pesos for a short trip in town, and 60-80 pesos to La Punta or Bacocho (2026 prices). The airport is only about 4 km from the main bay. Most visitors don’t need a car.

If you don’t know what a flight angel is, it’s when you volunteer with a dog shelter to take a dog on a flight to it’s new adopted home on your way back from vacation.

When you travel, check with nearby dog shelters and ask if they need a flight angel to your home town. They are always so desperate for them; they and the adopted doggie parents will be forever grateful to you.

It’s how I give back to the community I’ve been visiting. It doesn’t cost you anything and the shelter takes care of everything, it’s super easy! You just have to love dogs. 🙂
