Mexico Dog Rescue – Happy Endings
Winnie’s Story
Background: Winnie was found with her 2 sisters, tied up beside a remote roadway. Fortunately some kind highway workers found them and brought them to Huellitas De Acero in December 2023. They were approximately 4 months old.
From adoptive mom, Linda F. (BC, Canada):“I started volunteering at Huellitas De Acero in January 2024. By that time, Winnie’s 2 sisters had just been adopted. Being a timid puppy, she felt quite alone without her littermates. There are so many beautiful and friendly dogs, all wanting affection, that she was often pushed aside by the more outgoing dogs.
One day when I got a cookie out of my bag, I was instantly surrounded by about 20 dogs who were jumping and barking for attention. I calmed them down and attempted to teach a few to sit. A few did and Winnie was one of them. A couple days later, I said sit to some of the dogs and Winnie was the only one who instantly sat. She was obviously a very smart dog. Watching her during the next few weeks, I noticed she was also a very gentle soul.
Now, I did not intend to bring a dog home, but on March 15th, a very kind flight angel brought her to Vancouver Airport for me. It’s been 4 months and Winnie is the best dog ever! She is very intelligent and got top marks in obedience. She is such a loving, sweet dog. Even though she is about 50 lbs, she often wants to sit in your lap! Everyone can’t help loving her. Even our old rescue dog Marley has taken a new interest in life because of her. Her greatest joys in life are hanging out with people and running with dogs. We couldn’t ask for a better dog.
What was the most challenging thing about adopting a Mexican rescue dog? Were there challenges you weren’t expecting? How have you handled them? Winnie was very scared when she first came here. She was too scared to go for a walk and would just plant her feet like a mule refusing to move. She just had so much fear. Fortunately I had used a dog trainer with my other rescue dog and she helped us overcome her fear.
What’s been the best part of welcoming into your home? It’s been beautiful to see her confidence grow and see how quickly she has adapted to the good life here in Canada.
Thank you Cheryl and everyone at Huellitas de Acero for giving her a safe place to live until she found us.
Here is a photo of Winnie now…
Imagine a dog, alone and scared, abandoned on the streets of Mexico. Their future uncertain, filled with hunger, fear and sickness.
