Flying to Puerto Escondido: PXM vs Huatulco Airports (2026-27)

Puerto Escondido has its own airport (PXM), about 10 minutes from town. Huatulco (HUX) is about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours down the coast and usually has more flights to Canada. Both have direct flights to Canada and the US in winter. Most other routes go through Mexico City.

If you’re flying home from either airport, you can take a rescue dog with you as a Flight Angel. It costs you nothing, and we handle every piece of paperwork.

Getting between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido

The drive is about 100 km along the coast on Highway 200 and takes 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. You can take:

  • A private shuttle or taxi. Book it ahead, especially if you land in the evening.
  • A rental car from Huatulco airport.
  • A colectivo or bus from Huatulco town. It’s the cheapest option, but slower, and you’ll need to get from the airport into town first.

If you’re flying into Huatulco to save money, add the shuttle to the price before you compare.

When the international flights run

Canadian flights to Huatulco start in late October. Flights to Puerto Escondido start in December. Both run to about mid-April. American’s Dallas route flies to Puerto Escondido all year, and to Huatulco from November. In summer, most people fly through Mexico City.

Winter is also when the most dogs are waiting to fly home to adopters in Canada and the US, so it’s when we need Flight Angels most.

Flying home? Take a rescue dog with you

Huellitas de Acero is a volunteer-run dog rescue in Puerto Escondido. We have over 130 dogs in our care at any time, and many of them have adopters waiting in Canada and the US. What they need is a seat on a plane going north.

A Flight Angel is a traveller who’s already flying home from PXM or Huatulco and brings one of our dogs in the cabin.

  • It costs you nothing. We pay for the dog’s ticket.
  • We handle the paperwork. Health certificate, vaccination records, screwworm certificate for US flights, and the travel crate.
  • We meet you at the airport 2 hours before your flight and stay until you’re checked in.
  • The adopter meets you when you land and clear customs.

The only requirement is a flight that’s already booked, from PXM or HUX, with room in your carry-on allowance for a dog.

Become a Flight Angel. Fill in the form once your flight is booked and we’ll match you with a dog that fits your airline and route.

Want to meet the dogs before you fly? Visitors and volunteers are welcome at the shelter.

If you don’t know what a flight angel is, it’s when you volunteer with a dog shelter to take a dog on a flight to it’s new adopted home on your way back from vacation.

When you travel, check with nearby dog shelters and ask if they need a flight angel to your home town. They are always so desperate for them; they and the adopted doggie parents will be forever grateful to you.

It’s how I give back to the community I’ve been visiting. It doesn’t cost you anything and the shelter takes care of everything, it’s super easy! You just have to love dogs. 🙂
