Spending the Winter in Puerto Escondido: A Snowbird’s Guide (2026-27)
Updated September 2026 for the winter 2026-27 season.
Puerto Escondido is one of the easiest places in Mexico to spend a winter. From December to April it’s dry and around 84°F (29°C) every day, there are direct flights from Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary, and a studio in a residential neighbourhood rents from about US$250 a month. Canadians and Americans can stay up to 180 days without a visa.
Here’s what to know before you book a season.
How long can you stay?
Canadians and Americans don’t need a visa to visit Mexico. At the airport, the immigration officer decides how many days to give you, up to a maximum of 180.
- Officers now often give fewer days than you ask for, especially if you’ve visited a lot recently.
- Have your return ticket and your rental booking ready to show, and ask for the number of days you need.
- Canadians: check your province’s limit on time out of the country, so you keep your provincial health coverage.
Where to stay: neighbourhoods and 2026 rents
Long-term rents in US dollars per month, from mid-2026 figures. Expect to pay more if you’re booking only December to March, because that’s peak season.
| Neighbourhood | Feel | Studio | 1-bedroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rinconada | Where most locals live. Quiet, flat, shops and cafés, 10 minutes’ walk to the beach. | $250-380 | $350-550 |
| Centro / Playa Principal | Town centre, the main bay, the fishing boats | $300-500 | $450-700 |
| La Punta | Laid-back surf village at the south end of Zicatela | $380-620 | $550-850 |
| Zicatela | The famous surf beach, busiest area for cafés and nightlife | $400-700 | $600-950 |
| Carrizalillo | Near the best swimming beach, up the hill | n/a | $700-1,200+ |
| Bacocho | Spacious and quiet, near Playa Bacocho | n/a | 2-bedrooms $800-1,400 |
For a first winter, most snowbirds pick Rinconada or Bacocho for the quiet, or La Punta if they want a surf-town feel.
Finding a rental:
- Book your first month before you arrive, then look locally for the rest of the season. The best long-term places are often never listed online.
- Local Facebook groups for Puerto Escondido rentals are the main marketplace.
- Ask about internet before you sign. 10-50 Mbps is common, and fibre at 100+ Mbps is available in some newer buildings in Zicatela and Bacocho.
Getting here and getting around
Flying in: from December to about mid-April, Air Canada flies direct from Vancouver and Toronto, and WestJet from Calgary. Huatulco, about 1 hour 45 minutes away, has more Canadian flights, including Edmonton and Winnipeg. See every direct flight from Canada.
Driving down: the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway has cut the drive from Oaxaca City to about 2.5-3 hours, so you can stop in Oaxaca City on the way.
In town: taxis are cheap and everywhere. Most snowbirds don’t need a car if they live in Rinconada, Centro or near Zicatela.
What winter is like
- Weather: 84°F highs, 72°F lows, and almost no rain from December to April. See the month-by-month weather.
- Whales: humpbacks pass the coast from about December to March.
- Crowds: busiest from Christmas to New Year and during Semana Santa (March 21-28, 2027). Book those weeks early.
Practical tips for a long stay
- Health insurance: buy travel medical insurance that covers your whole stay. Most provincial and state plans pay little outside the country.
- Money: bring a bank card with low foreign ATM fees. Many small shops, taxis and markets take cash only.
- Water: don’t drink the tap water. Buy garrafones, the big refillable water jugs, and have them delivered.
- Phone: get a local SIM or eSIM in your first week. Your rental, your taxi driver and your neighbours will all use WhatsApp.
Give back while you’re here
A season is long enough to become part of the town, and one of the easiest ways to do that is with the dogs.
Volunteer at the shelter. Huellitas de Acero is a volunteer-run rescue with over 130 dogs in its care. Long-stay visitors are especially welcome, because you’re here for months, not days, and the dogs get to know you. See volunteer opportunities.
Foster a dog for the season. If you’re here for a month or more, you can foster one of our dogs in your rental. A dog in a home learns to live with people, gets used to a leash, and gets ready for its adoptive family, and it frees up a space at the shelter for another rescue. Contact us to ask about fostering.
Fly a dog home in April. Many of our dogs are adopted by families in Canada and need a traveller to bring them home. When your season ends, your flight home can carry one of them. It’s free, and we handle all the paperwork, the crate and the dog’s ticket. You might even end up flying home with a dog you’ve been walking all winter.
Become a Flight Angel. Fill in the form once your flight home is booked. Here’s how it works.
